Sufficient Grace

Sep. 6, 2006 - Sufficient Grace by Darnell Arnoult
Sufficient Grace is a wonderfully written novel set in a southern pocket of Virginia.where the attitudes and cultures reflect those of another time. The poetic storytelling of the life of Gracie is one that left me listening for the echoes of my own journey. Even as the reality of the depths of her struggle begin to unfold, it was sometimes difficult to wade through the logic of this mentally ill woman. I was left wondering how she had managed to appear only slightly odd(word used several times in the book to describe her) for so many years, and yet feeling such respect for the energy it must have required ... respect borne out of a need to believe that one doesn't simply wake up one day and have their world transformed into one of such delusions.
I found myself drawn to the pages of this book in a way that left me stranded and lonely at the end ... I need more than a couple of pages to put a bow on top of the package and call it a gift. Despite the ending, I found it a compelling read!
