I miss home ...

Apr. 14, 2006 - I miss home...
especially on holidays.

I haven't officially lived in Central Indiana for over 20 years ... I came to Maryville in 1985 and never went back for more than a couple of months over summer break my freshman and sophmore year in college ... but I loved going home. The feeling driving over the Ohio into southern Indiana ... the spring glimpse of the plowed fields ... the rich soil just waiting anxiously for corn or soybeans ... the smell of fertile, wet ground. The excitement that builds as you near the prized destination. It means freedom ... freedom to sleep in late or rise early and drink an entire pot of coffee or two ... freedom to leave for the day or sit all day on the porch and read ... freedom to take on a task that needs to be accomplished or watch 4 movies back to back, just because you can ... the freedom to visit old friends or linger with family ...

Easter is especially hard. It was one of my favorite times to go back home. Spring was just beginning there. I was able to revisit my spiritual birth. Recalling the moment in time when I settled eternity. I loved the sameness of it all. But alas, nothing stays the same. My mom and step-dad have moved. I don't share many of the same spiritual legacies with my father(though we share many other wonderful memories) and so Randy, AJ and I will stay here for Easter. We'll invite my sister, her family and a couple of college students to spend time with us, making new memories. I suspect that the hustle and bustle will allow only brief moments of remembering.
