Why are questions such scary things?
Jun. 21, 2006 - Why are questions such scary things ...
to adults?? I've been in two different conversations/situations in the past 10 days in which the grown ups in the situation wanted to steer away from looking at some hard truths brought about by difficult questions. Essential questions of faith and trust and identity, as well as questions about growth(programmatic and personal), accountability and being teachable. If our children simply wanted to pick up their toys and go home when the rules were questioned, wouldn't we direct them to stay and work out a problem? Figure it out! Don't be afraid that the answer to the question won't match what you originally thought ... I mean really, I was sticking my neck out to ask a few of the questions anyway. It wasn't like they were rhetorical questions or hypothetical questions ... I didn't already have an answer, though I already had an opinion. I'm willing to be wrong and rethink my position ... but "thou protesteth too much" keeps ringing in my soul! Are we so captured by friendship and a 'don't rock the boat' mentality that we don't want to examine issues in difficult life changing ways??
How do we change and grow and develop as people, as Christians if we aren't willing to look at the hard stuff?? And for me, then how do we expect growth and reflection and behavior changes in our children?
By the way, none of the people involved in either of these situations are homeschoolers! They are church goin' folk though! And it is simply frightening to me!
